The Public Health Improvement Act (H.R.2498), a package of various public health care bills, was signed into law by President Clinton on November 13. The legislation, approved by the House and Senate in late October, includes authorization for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to recommend placement of automated external defibrillators in federal buildings.
Other provisions include revised standards for organ procurement organizations; funding to develop a program to combat bioterrorism and antimicrobial resistance; expanded research efforts for lupus, prostate cancer, sexually transmitted disease and Alzheimer's disease; and modernization of federal research labs.
